Community Growth

Growth. Growth was a big theme for communities who want their values to truly create change in the world. What is a model or image for growth in a movement? Expansion and bigness is not always better, and comes with risks of integrity and depth. Health and growth must seek their balance. I look to nature for a vision of growth in contemplating this growth question. The Spider Plant shoots out stems and develops new satelite spider plants, that seek rooting under the firework of their leaves. Likewise, individuals and groups can seed their endeavors as they move to new places. Recently I visited my sister's rooftop garden where I saw her Wandering Onions. They grow strong tall shoots of green health, then top themselves with clusters of small round onions huddled lovingly. Soon the plant will be so top heavy that it will beckon the green shoot to arc toward earth and the cluster will root anew, creating new a new ethical home -- I mean plant.
